World famous cats guide - American Wirehair cat

2021-06-11

This is the quintessential American cat breed. It is the result of a spontaneous mutation that took place among farm cats in upstate New York around 1966. The feline's trademark wirehaired coat distinguishes it from other breeds. The American Wirehair is easy to look after and resilient to diseases which makes them a favorite among casual cat lovers as well as serious breeders.

American Wirehairs are similar to American Shorthairs, with the exception of a springy, wiry coat, including ear fur, and whiskers. This coat is similar to the wire coats of some dog breeds, such as terriers. Their fur requires little grooming. Wirehairs are of a moderate, sturdy build, with round heads, high cheekbones, and a pronounced muzzle. Females are generally smaller than males. The Wirehair coat trait is dominant, so any breeding between a Wirehair and another cat can produce wired kittens. Wirehairs have golden eyes, except for some white ones that have blue or amber eyes.

Similar to the American Shorthair, the Wirehair is playful, affectionate, good-natured, adaptable, and even clownish. It is an athletic cat that is moderately active. The American Wirehair is also smart and likes playing with interactive and puzzle toys. It likes to socialize with visitors and follows household members everywhere.  Wirehairs are equally content to play or fall asleep in their owners' laps. They have been described as cute and somewhat humorous. They are gentle and quiet, but also playful and active. They have quiet voices. American Wirehairs generally prefer to stay indoors.
